The Play: The wealthy, middle-aged bachelor, Sir Peter Teazle, thinks his reputation and, more importantly, his money is safe. His new innocent young wife knows nothing of the “fashionable” society of London…but she takes to it all too quickly…and all too well! She is the cleverest new member of Lady Sneerwell’s scandalous “Salon”, where wit, gossip and character assassination leave no one safe! Meanwhile, Sir Peter’s friend Sir Oliver must choose his heir from his two nephews…one “good”; the other “reprobate”…but which is which? This masterpiece of Restoration Comedy by Richard Brinsley Sheridan made its debut in 1776 – but its comic look at human frailty and hypocrisy is as relevant today as it was then. Brimming with witty dialogue, mistaken identities, supposed infidelity, eavesdropping and Scandal, both real and invented, The School For Scandal is a delightful, madcap and malicious romp!
