May I Have The Envelope Please.....?

While the 2003 Tony Awards were underway, the official Tony Awards web site asked their visitors to vote for their favorite plays that have won the American Theatre Wing's Tony Award for Best Play since the award was first presented in 1948. Then, during the awards telecast,  fans from around the world were able to log on to the site and choose among the five finalists.

The winner: Death of a Salesman.  The other finalists: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? ,  The Crucible,   Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, and Long day's Journey Into Night.

There was quite a ballyhoo at the end of the Millennium looking back at the best of the best.  Theater was no exception.  There were many surveys, but this one is from a off-beat source:

At the end of 1999, Broadway music radio station DJs were asked what were the Top Ten Musicals of the Century.  Here is their top ten:

1. Show Boat
2. West Side Story
3. Oklahoma
4. Guys and Dolls
5. Gypsy
6. Music Man
7. My fair Lady
8. Sweeny Todd
9. South Pacific
10. A Little Night Music
